Multimedia Art

Call for Art Exhibits (Deadline 20 May) and Technical Papers (Submission Closed)

ACM Multimedia is the premier conference in multimedia, a field that researches technologies that enable the use and exchange of content integrating the multiple perspectives of different digital modalities, including images, text, video, audio, speech, music, and sensor data. We welcome original works and papers from practitioners and researchers developing innovative approaches in creating culturally rich multimedia technologies.

ACM Multimedia 2019 is calling for contributions to the “Multimedia Art, Entertainment and Culture” program. In previous years, the program has presented provocative installations and research papers detailing advances in integrated approaches across the arts, technologies, and sciences.

The Multimedia Art, Entertainment and Culture Program will consist of 1) a juried/curated multimedia art exhibition, and 2) a multimedia art technical paper session, described in turn:

Multimedia Art Exhibition

The Multimedia Art Exhibition presents integrated perspectives in multimedia art. We encourage participation by practitioners whose works address the integration of multiple media forms, hybrid art, ubiquitous sounds, space art/zero-gravity-space art, time-based work, installations and environments, interactive media, digital comics (manga), games/serious games, cultural heritage, digital art in 2D/3D, digital communities, mobile media, digital art performances, and aesthetic exploration.

We welcome works that especially deal with fusions, intersections, transformations, and paradigm shifts of the current world throughout the old/new technologies; works that provoke contemplation, address contemporary issues, and interactively engage viewers in discovery and stimulate intellectual adventure and creativity.

All submissions will be juried, and international works are highly encouraged. All forms of digitally mediated works are invited, as well as work created in traditional media that comment on technology. In addition to the juried submissions, this exhibition will present curated works as a showcase of new perception, new media, and advanced technologies.

The jury will review submissions based on the following criteria:

  • Originality of the artistic concept, aesthetic and/or critical quality.
  • Unique and creative uses of media or technology.
  • Relevance to the ACM Multimedia 2019 themes.
  • Robustness and transportability of the installation.

Curated and juried works will be presented from 21-25 October 2019 during the main conference in the main conference space. Together with the exhibitors we will explore the presentation for an extended period around the main conference in another exhibition space. Past years have led to exhibitions that were well-received, and extended beyond the typical audiences for multimedia art.

Multimedia Art Technical Papers

We are calling for full conference papers describing the innovative use of digital technology in the creation, analysis or critique of cultural and entertainment artifacts, environments and processes. Papers should be submitted to the “Art and Culture” area of the multimedia experience theme. For further information see the ACM Multimedia Call for Papers: ../call-for-papers

Art and Culture papers should develop techniques that enable effective engagement of the public with art and other forms of cultural expression, balancing between sophisticated computational/engineering techniques and artistic/cultural purposes. Topics include (i) digital artworks, including hybrid physical digital installations; dynamic, generative, and interactive multimedia artworks; (ii) computational tools to support creativity, cultural preservation, and curation.

All submissions will be peer-reviewed by an experienced panel of reviewers. Accepted papers will satisfy the following criteria:

  • Novel computational and/or technology approach,
  • Original concept and execution,
  • Clear description of societal impact and/or audience reception,
  • High aesthetic quality.
